It is estimated that smoke from cooking fuels accounts for nearly 2 million deaths annually (WHO and UNDP 2009), which is more than the deaths from malaria or tuberculosis.

Summary:  Community Enterprise Solutions creates  positive health impact through empowering first-time women entrepreneurs to sell vital solutions that address problems such as vision problems,  pulmonary and water-borne diseases, lack of appropriate nutrition and more.

Glasses

Glasses: this is the number of near vision and UV protective glasses sold by MCM entrepreneurs since we began offering them in August of 2004. Loss of near vision and exposure to UV rays, dust and more can be devastating to an individual’s productivity.

Water Purification

Water Purification Buckets: this is the number of water purification buckets sold by MCM entrepreneurs since we began offering them in December of 2007. Due to high prices and cultural reasons, selling water purification buckets is one of our most challenging endeavors.

Improved Cook Stoves

Improved Cookstoves: this is the number of improved cookstoves sold by MCM entrepreneurs since we began offering them in February of 2003. An estimated 40% of Guatemalan families cook on open fires in their homes, greatly increasing their risk of contracting pulmonary and other diseases.

Child Nutrition

Child Nutrition: this is the number of healthy snacks distributed by the Centro Explorativo in the first three quarters of 2011 to the students that attend its school and after-school programs. Guatemala suffers from one of the worst chronic malnutrition rates in the world.
