Rural Education:Moving Forward
"As a teacher with experience working both in the U.S. and in Guatemala, I have witnessed first hand the impact that resources such as books, the Internet, and other technologies can have on students' interest, motivation and initiative to learn and explore. It is unfortunate that many of our students at the Centro Explorativo have little to no access to books while in school, and their creativity is often stifled by the rote teaching styles found so often in Guatemalan public schools. Together with the teachers and supporters of the Centro Explorativo, we strive to provide a space in which students can find the answers to all of their questions while always formulating new questions and seeking new answers throughout their lives."

CE Solutions will continue to support the important work of the Centro Explorativo and the newly formed governing body “Associacion Centro Explorativo”. CE Solutions currently provides 100% of the funding for the operational costs of the Centro Explorativo and pledges to continue to provide this support and look for other local/ outside means of support. We project increased services being provided in the following manner:
The Library
The library has experienced numerous successes over the past several years, growing rapidly and increasing the number of local people who benefit from its services. We have every intention of keeping it moving along the same track by expanding its coverage and providing new, improved services. Some of our most promising future projects include:
- Opening a second library branch, complete with internet access, numerous books, and several full time employees, in the nearby village of “La Pista”
- Creating after school educational clubs for local youth including junior achievement, chess club, and reading club.
- Designing a local website with original educational content, information on local educational events/programs, and links to Spanish language educational web resources
- Through radio broadcasts teachers from the Centro Explorativo will share important educational and health related information to listeners.
Computer and Internet Literacy
To ensure that the Nebaj area continues to improve its access to information technology we will be launching a number of new initiatives over the coming months, including:
- Formalized comprehensive computer and internet classes for adults and children
- Offering regular, month-long versions of the Internet classes, which were so successful earlier this year.
- Creating a Spanish-language educational website with original educational content, links to educational resources in the web, and a searchable data base containing list of all the books held at the Centro Explorativo library.
After-School Program
In an effort to extend the success of our after school program beyond our local participants our future goals include:
- Expanding the After School Program to the new Centro Explorativo in La Pista
- Organize teacher trainings at the Centro to inform local teachers of the methods utilized in our after school classes
La Pista Demonstration Greenhouse
In partnership with Nourish International, Social Entrepreneur Corps and volunteers from the First Presbyterian Church of New Vernon, New Jersey, CE Solutions recently constructed a new demonstration greenhouse in La Pista. This greenhouse will be utilized to train local farmers to cultivate a diversity of crops. In addition, students attending classes at the Centro Explorativo in La Pista will have the opportunity to learn important math and science concepts through gardening. The crops grown in the greenhouse will be served as a healthy snack to students or sold, with the profits going to support the Centro Explorativo.
“The Centro Explorativo is a very important establishment for the community of Nebaj. It is a place where children can learn new ideas outside of the routine of the public schools and young people who come to the Centro daily to do their investigations can have the joy of using the books and access to technology like the Internet. For me it is a center of study, a place that has all of the resources necessary to help students investigate and complete their work. There is no other place other than the Centro Explorativo that offers the young people of Nebaj the opportunity to conduct effective research.”
