Rural Education:

Proven Success

Since its foundation in 2003 the Exploration Center has made noteworthy progress. A complete list of all the joys and successes experienced working with the educators and youth of the Ixil community could fill a library in and of itself.

  • The Centro Explorativo is currently the only library in the Ixil region with internet access and computer classes for children.
  • The Centro Explorativo employs three full-time indigenous teachers and pays above average salaries.
  • The Centro Explorativo has moved three times to accommodate growing demand.
  • Roughly 1000 students and young people visit the library every month to conduct research for their class work, making it the most visited library in Nebaj.
  • Between thirty and fifty children (ages four to 10) take free after-school classes five days a week to improve their language, reading, and math skills and to learn about health and environmental issues.
  • Classes use an innovative curriculum developed and refined by several U.S. education specialists. Our two primary education consultants both have masters degrees and teach in elementary school systems in the United States.
  • There are more than 1,300 books in the library to date including reference works, literary works, children's' books, and works on history, math, science, physics, geography, geology, paleontology, anthropology, sociology, business, marketing, economics, biology, health, medicine, human rights, and law.
  • Special internet and computer classes are given to over 50  local children annually.
  • The teachers recently completed a computer database of all the books in all the major libraries in the Ixil region.  This database allows students and young people to more efficiently locate the books and resources they need to reach their educational goals

“I like to work in the Centro Explorativo because it gives me the opportunity to creatively practice my profession.  It is a blessing to be a teacher and to be a guide for the children that are the future leaders in our community”

Heydy Teresa Solis Gomez, Teacher, Nebaj, Quiche
